Amortising the die

Die cost is easy to put in perspective. Suppose a die costs USD 1,500 and you order 10,000 m of a profile weighing 0.8 kg/m — 8 tonnes of aluminum. The die adds USD 0.15 per metre, and nothing at all on repeat orders.

Lead time

For a typical profile, the sequence is:

  1. DFM review and die design — a few days once the drawing is final.
  2. Die manufacture — machining, heat treatment and nitriding of the die.
  3. Trial extrusion — first samples, measurement and, if needed, die correction.

Across the industry, first samples usually follow about one to three weeks after drawing approval; complex multi-hollow dies can take longer. Production follows sample approval.

Who owns the die?

When you pay for a custom die, it should be made for your profile only and never used for other customers’ orders. Dies are usually stored and maintained at the extrusion plant because they are built for that plant’s presses and die stacks. Make sure ownership, storage and maintenance terms are written into the quotation.
